Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association meets tonight

A message from Dave Hughes of the SBNA:

The August meeting of the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association will be held this Monday August 16th at 5:30p.m. at the Old City Bar, located at the corner of 17th and East Main Streets next door to Main Street Station. Please plan to attend, as we have a lot of ground to cover due to public safety meetings that have overshadowed our regular meetings the past two months.

SBNA meets Monday to discuss proposed nightclub/dance hall ordinance

The July meeting of the SBNA:

The July meeting of the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association will be held this Monday, July 19th at 5:00p.m. Please note this earlier time. This month’s meeting will be held at the Richmond Police Academy, and will be strictly dedicated to the proposed nightclub/dance hall ordinance. As this legislation progresses it is very important that all of our voices are heard, as the outcome of the ordinance will have a direct impact on every business and resident of Shockoe Bottom.

Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association preempted by Public Safety meeting

The scheduled Monday meeting of the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association has been preempted due to a Public Safety meeting taking place at 5PM at the Police Academy at 1202 West Graham Road regarding an amendment to City Code concerning the license tax applicable to public dance halls and for the purpose of modifying the regulations governing the operation of public dance halls in the City of Richmond. Dave Hughes urges SBNA members to attend the Public Safety meeting “to have an impact on the outcome of the legislation”.

SBNA meets tonight at Sheba

The February meeting of the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association will be held tonight, Monday, February 15th at 5:30PM at Sheba (9 North 17th Street). The focus of the meeting will be GRTC’s proposed Broad and Main rapid transit corridor and the proposed connecting corridor. Also, George Bolos of the 17th Street Farmers Market will present on a practical and achievable light rail plan for Shockoe Bottom’s Main Street Station.

Shockoe Chef Showdown

The 17th Street Farmers’ Market and the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association bring you the second annual Shockoe Chef Showdown is this Saturday, August 1st, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Top chefs from Richmond and the surrounding area will be competing for top honors in a Signature Dish Competition where entries will be judged in three main categories: the best meat dish, best vegetarian cuisine, and of course, the most decadent dessert. Taste-test the best $2 samples of each Signature Dish from 11AM to 1PM, when afterwards, main courses will be sold in bulk to take home for dinner!

SBNA meeting Monday

The June meeting of the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association will take place this Monday, June 15th at 5:30 p.m. at Café Gutenberg, located on the corner of 17th and East Main Streets. Included in this month’s meeting will be: a brief presentation by the Department of Public Utilities on Project Green Alley, a recap of our first two Red White and Brew festivals, a volunteer sign-up to I.D., and pour beer at future festivals, committee reports, and your ideas, comments, and concerns.

SBNA neighborhood clean up Saturday

The Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association’s annual Spring cleanup will take place this Saturday morning, May 16th from 8:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.

Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the River City Diner for complementary coffee before venturing out to clean our Bottom.  All participants will be served a complementary pizza lunch at Bottoms Up pizza following the cleanup.  The City of Richmond Police department has pledged a trash removal truck and extra manpower to assist us with our cleanup.  (Thank you, Lt. Emmett Williams!)

Local opposition to aspects of proposed GRTC transfer station

Last week the Historic Shockoe Partnership (Shockoe Slip neighborhood association) voted unanimously against the idea of Main Street Station being used as a GRTC transfer station. They are opposed to almost all aspects of the proposal (PDF). This evening, the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association board will be meeting to draft a formal letter of opposition to the current plan as GRTC presented it to City Council’s Land Use Committee last week.
