Tricycle Gardens announces first Urban Mini Farm in Manchester
We are breaking ground on our first Urban Mini Farm (yet to be named) at the corner of 9th St. & Bainbridge St., in old Manchester. We are setting up a vermiculture operation, hoop houses for cold weather growing, a living fence of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries (YUM!), and gardens for intensive growing. Thanks to the generosity of Robin Miller and Dan Gecker of Monroe Properties, we are ready to get the first model of high yield urban farming up and running on 1/2 an acre of under utilized urban land. The ultimate goal is job creation, as we implement urban farms throughout Richmond. Jobs, healthy food access, bio-diversity, ecological restoration, and more….Stay tuned for volunteer work days!

Wurzel’s VANITAS opens Russell/Projects in January
Heather Russell, formerly a gallery director and art advisor up north and now an adjunct professor at VCU in Art History, is launching the new gallery RUSSELL/PROJECTS with an opening in January. Urge has more:
Relocating to Richmond two years ago, Russell set her sights on becoming a player in Richmond’s vibrant creative milieu. “I wanted to be a part of it and to also contribute to fostering public arts projects and supporting young artists here in the community,” she explains.
The gallery’s initial exhibition will run from January 21st through to March 7th and features Helena Wurzel’s “VANITAS”–the first solo show for the artist.

change coming to Manchester
In the next couple months, two significant renovation projects in Manchester should be complete. The second location of Croaker’s Spot in scheduled to open next month and the Manchester Courthouse in scheduled to reopen the following month. The completion of these projects are spurring further growth in the neighborhood.
No one is overlooking Manchester now. The work at the old courthouse has already brought in a new law firm, and bail bondsman. A pizzeria is on the way and the growth is spreading east, up Hull Street. [via]

A Murder Was Committed in Manchester
From the Library of Virginia’s Virginia Memory: This Day in Virginia History
This scale drawing of a portion of Manchester, Virginia, illustrates a February 21, 1869, murder scene, showing two routes from a local tavern to the home of Richard H. Whitehead. After drinking with Thomas Willis at Talley’s Bar Room, Whitehead shot James Rogers. The Chesterfield County Court convicted both Whitehead and Willis of murder in the second degree and sentenced Whitehead to eighteen years in the penitentiary and Willis to seven. The map is interesting for its depiction of particular buildings and residences of the time, revealing considerable information about how the area actually looked.

“manchester mojo”
Richmond Bizsense takes a look at Fountainhead Development’s progressive plans for Manchester:
“It will be the poster child for new urbanism in that it will be apartments, office, an adult day care center and artist studios,” Gregory said… It’s not just mixed-use, but also mixed income. The apartments will be a mix of subsidized and market rate, and some will be designed for people with disabilities.
