Development will bring almost 500 new apartments to Shockoe Valley

January 25, 2009

Cedar-Broad lot may be of historic interest

An email to area civic association leaders from Kerry Johnson, a Virginia Environmental Officer in the HUD Richmond Field Office, about the proposed project in the 1800 block of East Broad (AKA Cedar-Broad, BKA the parking lot behind the McDonald’s) asserts that “this proposed project could have an adverse effect on historic property in its area of potential effect” but also that the “would be complementary to the neighborhood” and would return “the square block to its historic residential status”.

Some notes from the SBNA meeting

I crashed the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association meeting this evening at the soon-to-open Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant and it was super informative. If you’re neighbor a or business owner in the area and want to stay in the know, you should really be making it out for these every-3rd-Monday meetings.

proposed development at Cedar and Broad

Cedar and Broad Street

We’ve heard about a development proposed for Cedar/Broad/18th/Marshall that could be *big*. It would be mixed use, residential and commercial, to wrap around McDonald’s and use the rest of the block, and 3 to 4 stories. There will be a meeting for a special use permit Monday, January 21 at 7PM at American Tobacco Center community room, with materials on the proposed project available at the meeting. This area is in that particular cut-away corner that is *not* in the Shockoe Valley O&H district, btw.
