City’s oldest market faces fierce competition
Writing for the RTD, Will Jones takes a look at the business of the 17th Street Farmers’ Market:
Bolos said the 17th Street market has suffered from the 20 or so neighborhood and community markets that have sprouted on Saturdays across the area. “Just a few years ago, there were just more than a handful,” he said.
On Thursday, the 17th Street market had fewer than 20 vendors for its growers market — down from the 45 to 55 vendors about five years ago. Bolos said overall attendance at the market has increased in that time, largely due to special events.

17th Street Farmer’s Market may be open year round
Using stimulus money, the city is hoping to invest $600,000 in enclosing the 17th Street Farmer’s Market, allowing it to be open year round. The Richmond Economic Development Director believes a year round market will expand opporunities for vendors and members of the community. A farmer’s market in historic Charleston is the model for the potential project. City leaders say the project can be funded even if Richmond does not receive the federal stimulus money.[via]

However, a few folks visiting the market felt that it wasn’t ready on time, as evidenced by many last minute preparations including the Mayor’s aides having to help hang banners.
