Route 5 corridor meeting announced

The Richmond Regional Planning District Commission (RRPDC), City of Richmond, Henrico County, GRTC Transit System, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transport (DRPT), and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are developing a transportation plan for Route 5 to address mobility, access, and safety for roads, mass transit, bicycles, and pedestrians. The public is invited to take part in the Study Kick-Off Workshop on July 29 to share ideas on how to improve Route 5 from 7th Street downtown to South Laburnum Avenue in eastern Henrico County.
WHEN: 6-8 pm on Thursday, July 29, 2010
WHERE: Varina High School, 7053 Messer Road [MAP]
Brief presentations will be held at 6:15 and 7:15 pm. You may come at 6 pm or 7 pm to hear one of two identical presentations and review and comment on study materials.
Route 5 has served an important role for transportation in the Richmond region from its beginning; and, although modes of transportation have changed over time, transportation in the eastern part of Richmond and Henrico County remains vital. The corridor is now in transition from low-density residential, industrial, and rural land uses to mixed-use urban land uses.
If you cannot attend the meeting, you are invited to review information on the study website at www.Route5Corridor.com. Information on how to comment is also provided there.
The comment period for this study phase ends Thursday, August 19, 2010.

Word is circulating that there is a proposal to incorporate the Virginia Capital Trail as part of the shoulder of Route 5 through Henrico, rather than as the separate path as it is for the rest of the route. Supporters of the trail are encouraged to attend to meeting to lend their voices to defeating this bad idea.
