Local Coffee Slingers Contend in Southeast Regional Barista Competition
Baristas Erin Helland and Kimberly Certa of Shockoe Bottom’s GlobeHopper Coffeehouse & Lounge prepare to sling coffee with the best in Atlanta at the Southeast Regional Barista Competition. In similar fashion to a cook-off, barista competitions provide an opportunity for coffee professionals to prove the art of a real espresso requires much more skill than a push of a button.
GlobeHopper Coffeehouse & Lounge is participating in the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Southeast Regional Barista Competition in Atlanta February 19-21st in celebration of its upcoming second anniversary.
While describing the taste profile of the roast, each barista has fifteen minutes to prepare and present a series of espressos, cappuccinos, and signature beverages to a panel of seven judges. The acts are rated according to sensory aspects of presentation, taste, and overall knowledge and technical components of equipment operation, cleanliness, and overall efficiency of the performance. To further demonstrate their abilities, competitors must formulate a signature beverage to enhance the underlying characteristics of their espresso roast.
Erin and Kimberly are also looking for sponsors for their trip to Atlanta. If you are interested contact erin@globehoppercoffee.com.
Good luck Erin and Kimberly! I’m sure you’ll do great and thanks for representing Richmond!
