James Center Grand Illumination 2009 set for Friday December 4
A word from Venture Richmond on one of Richmond’s most popular holiday events:
On Friday, December 4 Downtown Richmond will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Grand Illumination at the James Center (10th & E. Cary Streets). Be there right at 6pm to experience a family tradition that has, for so many years, lit up downtown during the holidays.
Also that night throughout the River District your family can enjoy free horse & carriage rides starting at 13th & E. Cary Streets in Shockoe Slip at 6pm, free glow necklaces for children handed out by Venture Richmond employees, $2 canal boat rides at the Turning Basin on the Canal Walk at 6pm, an open house at Main Street Station (1500 E. Main St.) with giant art cards on display from Richmond Public Schools at 5pm, a Holiday Market at the 17th Street Farmers’ Market at 5pm and the popular Capital Square Tree Lighting and Governor’s Executive Mansion Open House at 5pm.

John, thanks for the tip. I updated the RichmondWiki Tacky Lights Tour article with the details.
I will be in town that weekend, it shouldn’t be too hard to convince the wife to come downtown with me for the Illumination.
I tried to get to this last year but apparently left (after work) too late. Was STUCK in traffic. When do people generally start milling about down there waiting for the lights to come on? what’s a good time?
Brooke- I’d try to be there a little before 6 to catch all the action!
Thanks for posting this! I wasn’t sure about the time and other info until I read this.
was bummed because another posting on this site (link below) said the reindeer lighting was at 6:25. We got there right after 6 and missed it.
