Is this the building at the north-west corner of Main and 18th?

    yep.

Yea… This is the building next to After Six (formerly Big Daddy’s, formerly Catch 22). The last few restaurant/bars in this spot had electrical issues. Hope that got fixed. Looks like they’ve put some money into it already. I’m curious as to why they chose this location. There is another already established Mexican spot on the block. Can’t wait to try it though.

Probably because the established Mexican spot on the block, LaBamba, sucks. My waitress couldn’t speak English. Ever try to ask a question about a dish when the waitress can’t speak or understand your language? I have, both in France and on 18th street.

  5. posted by Heather at July 1, 2009 3:56 pm [#]:

Let me guess. Her native language was Spanish? Perhaps she was of Mexican descent? The food at LaBamba has been great and the staff there works really hard to please each customer.

Is cld another language for asshole?

  7. posted by cld at July 2, 2009 6:40 am [#]:

gimme a break…The food is average at best and the margaritas are fairly weak and watered. Are you saying that speaking freakin English is NOT important anymore in America? What if I asked her “Does this dish include peanuts because I’m highly allergic?” Would it be important then? You people crack me up…
And no Shockoe, it’s not another language for asshole, it means FU!

I love La Bamba, my partner and I eat there all the time. The food is great, fast, and affordable. I can’t speak to the margaritas, but the Negra Modelos are always cold.

While it is true that some of the waitstaff do not have a strong grasp of English, there is always a manager or someone present that is better versed. As regulars, we have seen time and time again the manager and waitstaff there go the extra step to ensure that we’ve had a great dining experience.

How great it is that CLD will now have options.

La Bamba provides exactly what it advertises – cheap Mexican food. I would not expect a place with inflatable Negra Modelo bottles to serve gourmet cuisine. It’s exactly what a city Mexican place should be.

For those of you having problems with the language barrier, try pointing at the menu. Works when I’m hungover.

I am in rare agreement with shockoe on this one. La Bamba is what it is and my friends and I like it.

If you all have not noticed, cheap Mexican food is everywhere in Richmond now. I will be curious what the newcomers do to attract diners.

If it is indeed Aztec, shouldn’t there be some human sacrifices involved? Especially if it is to be located in such an historic area, authenticity is all.

I have worked with one of the owners
she works for me at the moment
I could not think of a more reliable proffessional person
    by the way
    SHE CAN COOK!!!!!!!!

Aztek Opened tonight….We went in to just check out the menu and found out we were the first customers. I had the carnitas which was the best I ever had. Lots of vegetarian options. No ABC license yet but I guess that’s coming next week. They have done a nice job inside looks really nice. They have an area of the wall set aside for local artists to display their work. I like restaurants that do that. Anyway food was great, hope to go back soon and try the Margaritas!

We can’t wait to check this new restaurant out!! Dandelion, do you know if the local art work will be for sale?

  15. posted by RedSkinzFAN76 at September 14, 2009 4:59 pm [#]:

Aztek Grill…My wife and kids had dinner there yesterday evening. I have never had such great service in Richmond from a Mexican restaurant. Everyone there welcomed us with a great smile. I had the Mixed Fajitas. DELICIOUS!! Waitstaff was super friendly and attentive. My family and I enjoyed our dinner. We’ll have to go back.

  16. posted by Dandelion at September 17, 2009 10:10 am [#]:

    Karen,
Yes the local art work will be for sale. Aztek has a Craigslist ad online looking for artists to display and sell their art. Cafe Gutenberg down the block does the same thing.

NOT WORTH YOUR TIME. BAD FOOD, BAD SERVICE…. NOTHING SPECIAL. I CHECKED IT OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST WEEK WITH A GROUP OF GIRLFRIENDS. WE WERE ALL DISGUSTED BY A VERY OLD MAN LEERING AT US FROM BEHIND ONE OF THE BAR TABLES.. HE APPEARED TO WORK THERE THOUGH HE HAD NO TRUE FUNCTION.. MAYBE AN OWNER?? HE LOOKED AT ALL OF US IN A CREEPY, DISGUSTING WAY THAT MADE ALL OF US WOMEN VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. THIS ALONE WOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO DETER ME … BUT THE DISHES DID NOT LIVE UP TO THE STELLAR DESCRIPTION IN THE MENU.. MAYBE THE HEAD CHEF WAS ASLEEP. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED TO DINE HERE AFTER SEEING ALL THE HYPE IN THE RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH FULL-PAGE STORY.
