Zuppa moving to Rocketts Landing

According to the RTD, Zuppa is planning to move from its current location in Shockoe Bottom to Rocketts Landing.

Business is picking up at Rocketts Landing, with the addition of a popular Shockoe Bottom restaurant and a commercial developer opening new office at the development straddling the city boundary with eastern Henrico County. [via]

And so the move to Henrico begins. Business gravitates toward people and profit. Zuppa could read the writing on the flood wall.

That whole area is just waiting for the recession to ease to explode with development and expansion. It’s the last section of the area not heavily built up.White Oak exists because of this coming boom.Rockett’s Landing same story.

What did you expect? Zuppa was simply hanging on waiting to see if Richmond had the guts to develop the bottom. It didn’t. Now the bottom will wither further and become more of a dead zone. It really pains me to watch Shockoe bottom languish. Vacant storefronts dominate the area and will only continue to grow without vision from this wasted city. Hey David G….Explode with development??? pleeez…. you haven’t lived in Richmond long!

Keep in mind that the City of Richmond has the highest meals tax in the country to pay for the white elephant downtown art center Center Stage.

    Meanwhile Henrico…

If my reading of the budget, and my math skills are correct, always an iffy chance, the add on to the meals tax brings in this year $3,892,645. The money goes into the general fund to pay “debt service costs related to cultural and educational facilities.” That equates to about two cents on the real estate tax rate. Since most estimates are that the mayor will have to cut an additional $30 million from the 2011 budget, we can then add the reductions from the meals tax. What fun. We would only have to raise the RE tax rate 17 cents just to break even.

Sounds like someone is making up facts.

If the meal tax for the city is not the highest in the state, how could it possibly be the highest in the county?

Norfolk and Portsmouth have higher meal tax rates than Richmond does.

    city……….sales tax meal tax
    norfolk……….. 5.0% 6.5%
    richmond………. 5.0% 6.0%
    alexandria…….. 5.0% 5.5%
    ronoake city…… 5.0% 5.0%

    fairfax co…….. 5.0% 4.0%

NOTE: food tax is (i think) 2.5%, so you pay that at the grocery/convenience store for food instead of 5.0%.

henrico, chesterfield, and hanover do not charge a meal tax.

This is why I am in the Wendy’s on Broad and some guy is asking me if we are in Richmond or not. He wants to know if he can afford lunch.

    Wendy’s? Scott really.
