June 13, 2009

On June 22, 1972, flooding from Hurricane Agnes put the James River all up into Shockoe and Manchester.
Just three years after Hurricane Camille pushed the James River to a record peak crest of 28.6 feet, Agnes upped the ante again with a peak of 36.5 feet. In the decades before the Richmond Flood Wall, this was enough to flood low-lying areas, close bridges, and shut down the city’s water supply.

Some time shortly after Agnes, C.F.Boone out of Lubbock, Texas, published a $2 commemorative magazine of the flooding called Hurricane Agnes… The Richmond Flood. The breathless prose tries to capture the excitement of the flooding and aftermath, while the photos show both specifically Richmond under water and the Richmond of almost 40 years ago.

The magazine is long out of print but can still be found online for around $20:

Just think if we had a plan to solve the flood plain issue.
Baseball in Richmond
I remember looking at this from the vadoc as a child with my mother. Funny how a picture can bring back memories long forgotten….
I still contend that the ultimate answer to the flooding issue is to daylight Shockoe Creek and put back some of the natural controls- more greenspace and trees. More green roofs downtown could help.
I would like to get a copy of this whole newspaper. Do you know where I could get it?
Thank you,
Nancy
