baseball ownership group visiting Richmond

Reid and Reese Ryan, of Ryan-Sanders Baseball, will be in Richmond today visiting the Diamond and proposed stadium site in Shockoe Bottom. Ryan-Sanders Baseball owns and operates two minor league teams in Texas. They are here to explore their options in owning an Eastern League franchise, but are quick to reiterate they are just looking. [via]

Here we go [insert AA Eastern League team here]‘s, Here we go! [clap clap]

And of course as I type that, the Defenders deal dies. I’m sure the NIMBYs are thrilled at another Richmond failure, but I still have hope :)

Anyone see Paul Woody’s RTD column about putting the ballpark in Short Pump? Unintentionally hilarious.

Incidentally, I think the concept that we need to appeal to suburbanites is pretty overstated. The Friday Cheers opener pulled 16,000 people downtown; a 6,000-seat ballpark would only need to pull a fraction of that crowd to hit capacity.

Throw in the empty-nesters and yuppies moving back downtown, and you’re on the cusp of a nice little wave.

Now then, I expect ShockoeBottomDweller will refute me with another “I know a guy” argument. Proceed, sir.

The Defenders deal had been dead for a while they just now announced it. But it is good to hear the president of the Eastern League actually promises a team by 2010

Dream on Omelete Just because we are talking a legit team does not mean the Shockoe Center project is an instant go. At least we have some legit backers interested not people who are paid by Highwoods. Creating a stir happened when they were talking about renovating the Diamond as well and look where it went. Either way not my problem anymore you can find out for yourself when your wave of people don’t want to pay the prices they plan to charge in Shockoe Bottom.

Oh dear, I agree with SBD (on that first post). It is promising that the EL president is somewhat excited about baseball in the area.

I still don’t think there is any evidence backing the opinion that prices will be higher than usual for a minor league park at Shockoe Center. That’s not the business model in the minor leagues…never has been, never CAN be.

I’m kind of surprised that people aren’t up in arms about an ‘outsider’ potentially coming in to be a majority owner of our Richmond team. That seemed to be a major strike (excuse the pun) against Highwoods even when Kreckman was deemed to be a local. Ooooh, its the great Nolan Ryan (no sarcasm there, he really was great)…I get it, blinded by the star power.

the reason there were 16,000 people downtown was it was country music, and baseball is kinda in that category. If they scale back the baseball in the bottom proposal it might get more support, in my umble opinion

Omelette, I don’t know who you are, but I like the way you think. Hang ten!!

Paul Woody had a brain fart and I told him so.

Nobody said this was going to be easy. Nolan Ryan brings a lot of credibility with him, including ballpark design and construction.

SBD, you are a real ray of sunshine.
