committed to Fredericksburg

A few weeks ago, Richmond residents were excited that the Slavery Museum planned for Fredericksburg might be moved to Richmond. Doug Wilder posted a response this week to the recent discussion on Virginia Tomorrow stating that the museum will not be moved to Richmond.

The Museum Board is committed to its stated and moral obligations to the Fredericksburg community…

Wilder dosent want the slavery/freedom museum to gain any traction in richmond, one reason could be that he is closely associated with some of the big owners of the land which is needed for shokoe baseball development.

Well, it’s certainly not gaining any traction in F’burg. There’s no reason to think it would be any more successful here, at least on the scale envisioned. It would be much more cost effective and to establish a variety of sustainable interpretive sites, historical markers and parks through the state and the south to establish a broader base for cultural tourism. Why put all your eggs in this basket?

It would seem that the Museum could be built as part of the ballpark, in a very dignified way, so that the dock and a representative slice of the area between 15th and 20th be preserved in the Bottom.

I’d put the Museum behind the Holocaust Museum on the river there, with walkways to the dock. Then people can got to both museums. Put some food choices around the river area. Lots of places to park.

Just a thought about recognizing that $40 million of human cargo went down that river in some years between 1640 and 1865. The total sum in real dollars and in human tragedy is unfathomable (although Dr. Edward Ayers at the University of Virginia has done as good of a job as anyone putting as price on the slave trade and Richmond’s economy).
