ACORN wants to restore creek in Shockoe Bottom

shockoe bottom: future transportation hub?

With a lot of discussion of the future of Shockoe Bottom, Style Weekly looks into the possibility of it becoming Richmond’s transportation hub.

John Lewis, chief executive of the regional bus company, the GRTC Transit System, has long had his eye on a vacant train shed behind Main Street Station. He wants to rehabilitate the second, track-level floor to become a sheltered transfer center offering a one-stop hub for trains, buses and future rail or express buses – Richmond’s own little Union Station.

Lumpkin’s Jail in March Smithsonian

picture-11

ACORN’s March newsletter has a pointer to the story in the March issue of Smithsonian about the dig at Lumpkin’s Jail:

From the 1830s to the Civil War, when Richmond was the largest American slave-trading hub outside of New Orleans, “the devil’s half acre,” as Lumpkin’s complex was called, sat amid a swampy cluster of tobacco warehouses, gallows and African-American cemeteries. This winter, after five months of digging, researchers uncovered the foundation of the two-and-a-half-story brick building where hundreds of people were confined and tortured. Buried under nearly 14 feet of earth, the city’s most notorious slave jail was down a hill some eight feet below the rest of Lumpkin’s complex—the lowest of the low.

New advertising sizes and contact info

Hey folks! You might’ve noticed that we’ve got a bigger advert than before over there to the left, and that our other smaller adverts have gotten a little chubbier, too. We’ve done to this to try to bring more value to the spots for our site sponsors, and hope that it does not detract from the experience of reading/using River District News. found: little black book

From Craig’s List:

I found this small black moleskine notebook on 18th street last night in front of Element Lounge. There is a ton of writing in it. Some of it looks like important stuff for literary works. There are also lots of receipts in there, and one check. Tell me the name of who the check is for, and we can arrange get your book back.
