What should our next baseball team be named?

Now that we’re finally free of the Atlanta-wanna-be Braves and it looks like we might get another baseball team, it is time to raise the big question: what should be the name of Richmond’s baseball team? Other not-major-league cities have signature team names like the Lansing Lugnuts or the Toledo Mudhens… what just screams RICHMOND?

“What Screams Richmond?” I’ve deleted the ones in poor taste -

The Richmond Bottoms, Tomatoes, Crabs, Floods, Drunks, and Monuments.

Here’s a nice one -The Richmond Ravens.

I know a little bit about this subject, and as much as we’d all like to toss around monikers that make us giggle and/or groan, I know that whatever prospective team pulls into town will call themselves whatever they want to. The fact that a contest to “name the team” will probably surface is only an exercise in gathering public attention, and there’s usually someone who’ll pick the pre-determined name anyway.

The Richmond Rapids would use the river for inspiration. It shouldn’t cause any trouble with the politically incorrect sports nicknames police, but if the payers don’t move so quickly, there would be another kind of problem.

Then there’s the Richmond Roscoes, which would underline the widespread love of handguns, firearms in general, and a certain way of seeing the Second Amendment that seems to be popular in some local precincts.

The Richmond Redux would work for history buffs.

Me, I like the Richmond Rays.

Correction: I should have written, “if the players don’t move so quickly.”

I love all the alliteration! And, I like Ravens, Rapids, and the other names that celebrate Richmond and the people who love it.

I like Rebels, or anything that would promote historical tourism, except I think it would automatically alienate 1/2 the population. My 2nd choice would be something specific to baseball that starts with an “R”, except that nothing comes to mind. 3rd choice would be to dig up a name from our sporting past. I like Richmond Rifles, and we can hand out pop guns to the 1st 500 youngsters. All the rest of the “R” names from our past sound like hockey teams.

Given the proximity of the marker for Gabriel, perhaps the Richmond Rebellion wouldn’t be as off-putting as it looks at first glance.

  16. posted by gray at November 26, 2008 4:26 pm [#]:

Down south, “rebels” is synonymous with confederates. Most likely, it will remain off-putting.

Rapids, Rebels, Ravens are the the best choices.

Richmond Rapids has the best ring to it Ravens, eigh, we’re a little close to the Baltimore Ravens. And Rebels, well Im sure some groups wouldn’t want that, with decent reason. My vote is Rapids.

I agree about having a name that reflects Richmond.

    Richmond Rapids is good.

I also think a localized name would be much better than what we’ve had – it’s hard to get behind a team with a generic name that you can’t associate with as “your” team –
Richmond Rivermen, Richmond Rapids (seconded), Richmond Monuments, Richmond Railroaders (right next to the tracks & station…headline “Richmond railroads Team X” – so many metaphors, chants available), Richmond Revolutionaries…

    Richmond Romantics.

It’s a romantic notion that baseball will succeed here.

Who cares what the name is? If they are not affiliated with the Braves, I won’t be going anyway.
