next up for Rocketts Landing
The RTD has a look at the next phase for Rocketts Landing, “to build five swank riverbank town houses”:
The development’s next phase — the Riverbank Terraces — is designed to reflect the elegant architecture along Monument Avenue, said Marti Cooke, the project’s director of sales and marketing. [...] The town homes, ranging from 3,240 square feet to 4,495 square feet, will be listed for $1 million to $1.6 million. The facade will be limestone with touches of black wrought iron and very high-end finishes, Cooke said. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2009 with completion by midyear.

Shockoe and Turkey Town (1910)
In the November issue of Richmond Magazine, Karry Kollatz excerpts from his own (now available!) Richmond in Ragtime and takes a look at the immigrant enclave of Turkey Town and the red-light district that was Shockoe:
Along East Main Street into Shocke is a warren of wretched slums. Past 17th Street are busy saloons. Neglected, barefooted urchins run the streets, where starvation and nakedness color their formative experiences. Here in the city’s lower depths are clusters of overcrowded, dilapidated hovels.

anyone lose a Pekingese?

We have found a small 2 y/o, think it’s a pekingese mix dog. He was found on 20th street between Franklin and Grace. He is in fine condition, fairly clean and with a small limp, but not too bothered by it. He has an adorable little underbite. He is not neutered and is very well behaved. If this is your dog, please call our office at (804)377-9900 or the Richmond Animal Care and Control at (804)646-5573.

condo living apparently not for everyone
- Example #1:
Nothing wrong with masturbation. We all do it. But you need to know that when you close your mini blinds people on higher floors can still see through them.
- Example#2:
What do the By Laws say about putting your personal property on your personal balcony? Gee, I don’t know - what don’t you consult the FUCKING BY LAWS YOURSELF? Can’t even get off your ass and do that much?? [...] I cannot wait till February. Fuck you.

The Lament of our Dwindling Fisheries @ GlobeHopper
Back Porch @ GlobeHopper welcomes guest speaker Richard Taranto to talk about the future of seafood and our oceans. As we all are aware, many of the earth’s natural resources both, renewable and non-renewable, are under stress. This Monday’s discussion will focus on another resource that was once considered almost limitless — fish, and look at the decline of the major ocean fisheries, what is causing the decline and what we can to support better fishery management.
