Charged with walking in the street? That sounds excessive to me…
Sounds like we are not getting the whole story from either the arrestee or the police.
Ummm…did you watch the video? The police told her numerous times to move along and have a nice night. She was standing in the middle of a fight the police were breaking up even after being asked to move. She deserves what she got in my opinion.
She and the NAACP got ripped apart by the posters on inrich. I hope she read every comment and realized how asinine her accusations look to the majority of the community.
Go here http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news/wednesday.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-09-24-0152.html to see the entire video and read the article.
Having lived on 17th Street for years now and seeing all the issues the police deal with, I believe fully this woman got what she deserved. She was video taping in the same area police were working to secure our streets. The police working this area have much to contend with as the community is making its changes. The video shows she had ample warning and the police were very patient, especially as this woman was so confrontational.
Shockoe Bottom has been the place to party and bring the negative elements of the city long enough. Its now OUR TURN to enjoy the community we live in while we happily share it with respectable people who follow rules.
Our message is clear. Respect our Police, respect our neighborhood, and respect our residents. If you can not do these things, you are not welcome in Shockoe Bottom.
I ditto all the folks that say this woman was out of line.
It’s clear to me that she does not have a case. Another Tawanda Brawley episode if you ask me. Where’s Johnny Johnson, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson?
Give it up. Find something useful to be angry about instead of looking for false reasons to nail someone on civil rights violations.
Shame on you Jo.
yep, cops should go around arresting people for holding video cameras. USA! USA!
slv,
CLEARLY you did not watch the entire video!
Ms. Jefferson was given numerous opportunities to avoid arrest by simply doing what the officers asked of her…to keep moving. The officers obviously were trying to take care of the fights which had broken out in the area AND tried to keep people moving along FOR THEIR OWN PROTECTION yet Ms. Jefferson clearly felt that what the officers asked did not apply to her.
She instigated her own arrest and good for the RPD for arresting her! She got in their way while they were trying to enforce order in the area yet SHE feels HER rights were violated.
Please Ms. Jefferson, go back to where ever you are from and stay out of the area! Cry civil rights all you want but you know you got what you deserved. Too bad they didn’t throw more charges at you!
Funny isn’t it that the police have asked to see the video yet it hasn’t been provided to them. Perhaps Ms. Jefferson has watched it again and sees that the video would vindicate the police…
Protecting our streets? Right… That’s a laugh. There job is to protect and to serve.
You have the right to a camera and you have the right to film officers as they infringe on the liberties of Richmond’s citizens.
oldhick,
Did you actually WATCH the whole video? These officers were not infringing on the liberties of Richmond’s citizens… I suppose you probably think there was some civil rights violation here right?
Adding to what SEW said…
Whats to say the person under arrest wanted to be videoed? The suspect had a right to privacy and the right was overthrown by Ms Camera woman.
So many ways you can look at this.
I’m not certain on the finer points, but I’m under the impression that if you are in a public space then you pretty much consent to having your likeness photographed/recorded. If this is your complain, take it up with the vendors doing the same thing to *everyone* on 17th Street.
The cameras were my idea along with fellow business owners. No vendors included as its not a “17th Street” thing. This came up over a year ago. When you have problems with people urinate and defecate on your door just about nightly, or causing other commotion such as breaking and entering or assaults, etc, you grow tired of it quickly. This way I am protecting my property as well as business owners are able to watch their buildings. Ask River City Diners owner about the camera and how he managed to figure out who broke into his restaurant. Ask 321 Supper Clubs owner or the former owner of Big Daddies if they supported a camera now that they were both broken into.
My point was simple. The man being arrested didn’t have a choice being filmed when he was being arrested. That could be an embarrassment to him in the future. Walking down an alley and abiding by laws is nothing to be ashamed of and the video is not kept. If you break a law, we use it to find you. End of story.
I fail to see a difference between your cameras and her camera.
The big question is why the police have to have such a large presents when the bars close. It appears that some bars are attracting such a disorderly crowd that they have to be policed in a manner shown on the video. Years ago the same problems occurred on the 900 block of west Grace Street. Finally the bars were closed.
I would like to see police with large presents myself. I could use a new refrigerator or maybe an X-box 360.
