Whew! Well, when I heard this was happening–and they were talking about painting murals in Walnut Alley–my stomach clinched a little.
I was hoping they didn’t intend painting over the May 1988 mural by the Richmond Artists Workshop, including portraits of several of the artists, that has survived two floods and Gaston. On a history walking tour this summer, I actually included it on my walk!
Thankfully, it remains with the new work, too, and the alley looks spic-and-span.
Good job.

One of the artists from the original creation was on hand to touch up that mural as well as create the 6 new murals which now adorn the alley.
Our goal was to get the alley completely cleaned up by the community, in hopes the community would keep it clean. This event was such a success, we hope to keep it going to about 3 times each year.
As our veteran artist Greg said in one of our interviews, “who knows, we may be in YOUR alley next!”
Many thanks to the Shockoe Bottom community for all your generous support to get this renovation completed.
