What promises to be one of the hottest tours this summer is coming to Shockoe Bottom! Greater Richmond SCAN presents the “Soundtrack of Your Summer Tour” featuring live music from pop/rock band Boys Like Girls, multi-platinum selling punk/rock band Good Charlotte, and up and coming Metro Station and The Maine. This Monday, August 4, we have a panel of speakers to share their experiences living in intentional communities –- localized communities of people or families pursuing common interests and concentrating on common values. Join us to talk about what community means in the city of Richmond and the impact that living in an intentional community and sharing resources can have on our local environments.
Back Porch Energy Initiative moderates multi-media discussions based on social topics of social-interest every Monday at GlobeHopper. The gathering begins at 6:30PM, multi-media discussion begins promptly at 7PM.

Mos Def is one of a handful of artists who have breached the gap between underground and mainstream, music and film, small venues and main stage festival performances, and has done so with incredible success. Beginning with music in the mid 90’s, Mos Def found himself to be one of the primary hip-hop artists leading a charge from back alley rhymes to featured spots on radio and MTV. Within a short time frame he had already begun to work with such artists as De La Soul and Talib Kweli and became a mainstream sensation almost overnight.

A reception for Alix Bryan will be held at Scoot Richmond starting at 5PM on August 9, 2008. Alix Bryan is on the homestretch of tracing a 22,000 mile Peace sign on the continental United States. When she arrives in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 8, 2008, Bryan will have created the largest Peace sign in history.

Women’s Roles in Civil War History

Women played leading roles during the Civil War as spies, nurses, surgeons, and abolitionists. This 30-minute tour through the Center’s exhibit, In the Cause of Liberty, will explore the lives of eight women who impacted history. Laboring on the Home Front starts at 2:00pm, immediately following, and is Free. National Park Service Ranger Susie Sernaker will discuss the expanding role of women, free blacks and slaves in the Richmond workforce during the Civil War.
