Williams on Belle Isle

Michael Paul Williams offers up Belle Isle as an example of “how we might use our most precious asset to bridge the gap between Richmond’s promise and reality”. He argues that development along the river needs to be for everyone (to “eat, drink, and play”), and not a walled-off private compound.

One Response to “Williams on Belle Isle”

What is often not considered is that the river is now the domain of the enthusiast, not the ordinary citizen. Many people are phobic about crossing the footbridge to Belle Island. It is not easily accessed by the handicapped. Development along the river should open up access to the casual visitor and attract business and tourism. The river is one of our most important economic assets. Most people love it but never see it from any closer than a bridge. Shopping and restaurants along the river do not exclude they include. Condominiums create a 24 hour prescence. Tobacco Row has provided a springboard for development in Church Hill, the River District and downtown. We can have both development and access to the river.
