“Richmond’s uncomfortable, untold history”

Style Weekly’s Look Away, Look Away delves into Richmond’s history as a major center of the nation’s domestic slave trade, possibly the city’s biggest industry during the first half of the 19th century. The “facts found underfoot in Shockoe and at Rocketts and Manchester” paint a grim and astounding picture.

Quaker/Undergrond Railroad history deserves more attention.

I think, but am not sure, that the Elizabeth Van Lew house (now serving as Bellevue Elementary) in Church Hill was also a stop on the underground railroad. Do you know if this is true?

Elizabeth Van Lew was a Union spy and was the first to raise the U.S. flag when Richmond fell. She was an incredible woman with a rich history. Inside Bellevue is a small museum honoring Elizabeth Van Lew. Here is a little information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Van_Lew and http://www.civilwarhome.com/vanlewbio.htm

The mansion where Elizabeth Van Lew lived was razed to build Bellevue in 1911. See http://www.vahistorical.org/lva/adamsvanlew.htm
