Quaker/Undergrond Railroad history deserves more attention.
I think, but am not sure, that the Elizabeth Van Lew house (now serving as Bellevue Elementary) in Church Hill was also a stop on the underground railroad. Do you know if this is true?
Elizabeth Van Lew was a Union spy and was the first to raise the U.S. flag when Richmond fell. She was an incredible woman with a rich history. Inside Bellevue is a small museum honoring Elizabeth Van Lew. Here is a little information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Van_Lew and http://www.civilwarhome.com/vanlewbio.htm
The mansion where Elizabeth Van Lew lived was razed to build Bellevue in 1911. See http://www.vahistorical.org/lva/adamsvanlew.htm
For a few more photos of the original mansion see http://dig.library.vcu.edu/cdm4/results.php?CISOOP1=all&CISOBOX1=van+lew&CISOFIELD1=CISOSEARCHALL&CISOROOT=%2Fpostcard
