Monday nights at GlobeHopper

GlobeHopper has a announced a series of open dialogue events each Monday. The calendar so far has 3 great Monday night discussions set up for the next 3 weeks: Smart Growth in Richmond, Local Foods, and The New Three R’s Moving from Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Renew, Replenish and Restore

Monday, May 5 Smart Growth in Richmond

Suburbia has become part of the American Dream promising space, affordability, and family life. Over the past fifty years suburban life has exploded putting increasing demands on transportation and development. We will watch clips from documentary, The End of Suburbia, that explores the complex issues surrounding suburban expansion. Join us to talk about smart growth in Richmond and discuss options that are sustainable, feasible, environmentally conscious, and fair. We will also discuss Richmond’s Downtown Master Plan and how to get involved with local smart growth initiatives through the local non profit, the Partnership for Smarter Growth.

Monday, May 12 Local Foods

Southern author Wendell Berry once said that, “eating is a political act.” What you put in your mouth or pull off the grocery store shelf affects a whole lot more than just personal health. We will watch The Greenhorns, a documentary that explores the lives of America’s young farming community—its spirit, practices, and needs. Join us to discuss the new wave of American agriculture and explore ways to eat locally and seasonally in Richmond.

Monday, May 19 The New Three R’s - Moving from Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Renew, Replenish and Restore

The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. Join us to talk about the challenges facing recycling in Richmond and meet creative entrepreneurs who have found innovate ways to make old stuff new again.
