James River to be topic of RTD Public Square

The future of the James River and property along the river will be the topic of a Public Square Meeting organized by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The Public Square will be May 5 from 7-8:30PM @ 300 East Franklin Street. [via]

A varied panel will discuss the issue and then the conversation will be opened to the audience for questions/comments.

The panelists will be:

  • Leighton Powell, executive director of Scenic Virginia;
  • Bill Street, executive director of the James River Association;
  • George Ross, of R3 Development and the proposed Echo Harbour project;
  • L. Preston Bryant, Virginia’s secretary of natural resources;
  • Rachel Flynn, Richmond’s director of community development; and
  • Jud White, an environmental policy manager for Dominion.

    I participated in the Richmond, VA citizens meetings that led to the vision for the city of Richmond. It’s an exciting vision that will develop a system of parks along the James and tree lined city streets that will invite tourists and suburbanites to play in our city. Charleston is a good example of a city that has successfully developed a beautiful waterfront and tree lined streets to draw people downtown, thus giving businesses access to more customers.

    The Master Plan is a critical step to creating a vibrant city — please, please let your Council know you care. And, if you can — attend the meeting on Monday.

    This is a very important forum with the Richmond Times Dispatch to discuss the future of the James River and its overall long-term ecstatic value to Richmond. Not everyone has the same VIEWS … regarding the utilization of the river for serving all the citizens of the City. It is critical that people attend this forum and state their positions about preserving, conserving and not exploiting the James River for political, developmental and/or self-serving mercantile gains. To do otherwise would be harboring on the unconscionable!
