Ferenc Mate was born in Hungarian Transylvania. When it was annexed by Romania, he escaped to Hungary. After the Hungarian rebellion against Soviet occupation, he escaped to Austria. He has lived in Vancouver, New York, Rome, and Paris and now lives in the 13-century friary where he, his wife and son run the winery.
