3 great reviews of LuLu’s

lulus richmond

The good words about the good food at LuLu’s keep rolling in: A site for your cheating palate from the RTD’s Dana Craig, Good brunch at Lulu’s at CHOW HOUND, and more in Richmond.com’s food column Dish.

We have read the reviews and are excited about having a meal at LuLu’s. They have a reservation policy that makes absolutely no sense. They reserve half the restaurant and hold the other half open for walk-ins. The problem with that is when you walk in and see half of the tables’ open and the walk in tables full it creates frustration. But you deal with the frustration and go to Havana’s across the street and have an exceptional meal.

Then you decide to make a reservation and still cannot get a table. I believe that LuLu’s needs to rethink their reservation policy and either reserve the entire restaurant or take no reservations at all.

Would love to enjoy a meal someday in the very near future.

They are changing the policy! Come back and give’um another try!

After reading a favorable review, my friend and I decided to check out Lulu’s last week. Unfortunately, the only part of the evening we enjoyed was each other’s company.

I’m a firm believer in trying to find something positive in any experience, so I will say that our waiter was pleasant and he had a great smile. Sadly, the food was marginal. Certainly nothing special and nothing that lived up to the reviews. The restaurant was REALLY loud. In fact, I left with a sore throat from yelling to my friend across the table. The kitchen is far too visible and mid-way through our meal, a lovely burning smell wafted through the place that was enough to turn your stomach.

But, the real kicker came at the end of our meal while we were awaiting our check. Our waiter had already asked if we would be having dessert, another drink, etc. We had indicated that we were done. Several minutes had passed and our waiter had not returned with our bill. My friend and I were happily chatting and drinking our water, (since our wine was long gone) when the Manager (Mark, I think) came over to our table.

At first I was impressed with this personal touch, until I quickly realized his true purpose at our table. He pointed out that there were quite a few people waiting for a table and asked if he could get us an after-dinner drink at the bar, so someone else could have our table. Our table just happened to be right next to the bar area, so I looked over at the bar and saw that there were no seats and no standing room, so exactly where were we going to have this after-dinner drink? Basically, his “offer” was the equivalent of kicking us out of the restaurant. Anyway, we declined the drink and explained that we were still awaiting our check. Once the waiter came by with our check, we settled up and got the heck out of there.

We slinked passed the waiting patrons feeling embarrassed and humiliated (the goal of any fine restaurant, right?). To them, I’m sure we looked like two women sipping water, “bogarting” a table.

So, in essence: we paid $5 to park, $80 for dinner, and the opportunity to feel humiliated, unappreciated and unwelcome….well, I suppose that was priceless.

Needless to say, we won’t be back.

Wow, Karen. I don’t blame you for being miffed by what you describe at LuLu’s. I would have been too.

But I can’t help but feel this was a very random, “off night” because I’ve been several times (busy, semi-busy, sat at the bar, sat at a table) and I’ve experienced nothing but the best.

Mark, I think he’s the bartender, is the nicest person I’ve had the honor of chatting with randomly. He’s been nothing but genuine and sincere to everyone every time I’ve been. I’m sure it was a misunderstanding in him “asking” you to leave.

But I would have been embarassed too if I thought everyone was glaring at me for hogging a table.

I hope you’ll give it another chance.

Check please….thank you for your comments.

That’s really interesting about Mark, because when he first came over, we asked if he was the Owner and he said, “No, I’m the Manager.” That was before we realize why he had come over….I wonder why he would misrepresent himself that way? Very strange.

    Karen,

The owners of LuLus’s are Paul Keevil and Steve Jurina (see this Style article).

I recently stopped by for brunch on Sunday. I was looking forward to a new restaurant in the bottom. The brunch menu was less than stellar. The menu was all egg entrees and sandwiches. Everything had tomatoes on it (my friend doesn’t eat them) and no salads. A lop-sided offering.

They seemed a little disorganised. We sat by the kitchen and listened to the cook yell at the staff for picking up orders that wasn’t theirs.

I don’t know how long they’ve been open, but they really need to get it together. I can go to River City Diner two doors down and get a better brunch without smelling like the kitchen when I leave.
