another hurdle for Echo Harbor
Richmond Chief Administrative Officer Sheila Hill-Christian has asked the RRHA to reconsider the sale of two vacant lots that were earlier promised to the developer of the proposed Echo Harbor condominiums. The 2 properties, on a section of Main Street that leads to Richmond Intermediate Terminal, would be necessary for the developer to build a bridge from them over Dock Street to the project for emergency access. Hill-Christian says that the earlier agreement to sell the properties was made without knowing that Wilder and city planners opposed it. [via]

Sterling Row as good urban infill
Edwin Slipek Jr.’s Space Solution in this week’s issue of Style takes on Richmond’s plague of surface parking lots, calling them “unsightly and underproducing spreads of real estate are scar tissue resulting from the demolition of the city’s historic fabric throughout the years”, and lauds the Sterling Row Condominiums for the inner parking courtyard and the overall design.

your representatives at work
From Waldo Jaquith, creator of cvillenews.com (the inspiration for this site), comes Richmond Sunlight, “a website that aggregates information about the General Assembly”. Keep an eye on what Dwight Jones, Jennifer McClellan, Henry Marsh, or any of the rest of the members of the Virginia House or Senate are up to.

Echo Harbor = Moonies?!?
As good as any of the made up stuff: The developers of the proposed Echo Harbor condos, USP Rocketts LLC, is “a subsidiary of a holding company spun off by the Unification Church” (ie “Moonies”). No word on any plans for massive weddings. [via]

light rail from Shockoe to Short Pump, maybe
The city is working on “a fast-paced bus service to run from Shockoe Bottom and downtown Richmond to Willow Lawn”, with plans to extend the route to Short Pump. Sheila Hill-Christian, Richmond’s chief administrative officer, said that this line will be “a precursor to light rail development, which is so strongly needed.” [via]

proposed development at Cedar and Broad

We’ve heard about a development proposed for Cedar/Broad/18th/Marshall that could be *big*. It would be mixed use, residential and commercial, to wrap around McDonald’s and use the rest of the block, and 3 to 4 stories. There will be a meeting for a special use permit Monday, January 21 at 7PM at American Tobacco Center community room, with materials on the proposed project available at the meeting. This area is in that particular cut-away corner that is *not* in the Shockoe Valley O&H district, btw.

Manchester on the James shrinks to 4 stories
Confirming what we had back in November, it is now being officially reported that Crosland has moved away from plans for a 17-story luxury condo development at the south end of the Lee Bridge and is now proposing a 4-story building that would include street-level retail.
Some residents in the South Richmond neighborhood remain concerned, saying they fear the developer’s decision to remove the term “condominium” and trim the size of units from 800 square feet to 650 square feet will make for renter and not owner-occupied residences. Plans call for up to 200 units.
